The Danish actor Thure Lindhardt will star in a new biopic about the 19th-century Norwegian artist Nikolai Astrup.
Titled Flammen over Jølster (Unofficial English title: The Flame over Jølster), the film will depict Astrup’s life and work. The film has been described as a documentary on the West Norwegian Film Centre’s website, but several news outlets, including NRK, have confirmed that Lindhardt will be playing Astrup in the film. It has also been confirmed on IMDb.
Nikolai Astrup is a famous 19th-century artist who used Norwegian nature in his works. Astrup was a distinctive, innovative artist noted principally for his intense use of color depicting the lush landscapes of Vestlandet featuring the traditional way of life in the region. There is a large exhibition of his works in Bergen, Norway.
Flammen over Jølster is directed by Pål Øie, who is famous for his Norwegian horror film Vilmark and Vilmark Asylum.
Lindhardt is a well-known Danish actor who had his breakthrough in the film Here in the World (2000). He has later appeared in many films both locally and abroad, including The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. He is, of course, best known for his leading role in seasons three and four of the hit Danish/Swedish crime series The Bridge, where he played the Danish detective Henrik alongside leading lady Sofia Helin.
“This is a very important role, and [depicts] an important time for Norway and for Europe. [This was a time where] the great artists, musicians and writers emerged.” says Lindhardt. When asked about what language he’d be speaking, he said “There is not a lot of dialogue in the movie, but I talk a little. There will be a variation of Danish, Norwegian, and the Jølster dialect.”
Flammen over Jølster has been filmed in Jølster throughout summer. Jølster is a region in Western Norway roughly halfway between the Sognefjord and the Geirangerfjord. The film will be released in cinemas next year. No international release has been announced.
