Not only does the Swedish film The Square have six European Film Awards and one Palme d’Or under its belt, but now Ruben Ostlund’s latest film has been shortlisted for an Academy Award!

The film is the only of the five Nordic countries to advance through to the shortlist (the others being Tom of Finland for Finland, Thelma for Norway, Under the Tree for Iceland and You Disappear for Denmark).

Also shortlisted is Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father and Robin Campillo’s BPM from France, the latter of which has been the most critically acclaimed of the year.

Now it is up to the foreign committee to select five films from the list. Considering The Square’s success this year, we hope to see it there!

The nine finalists for nominations in 2017 are:

Chile, A Fantastic Woman, Sebastián Lelio
Germany, In the Fade, Fatih Akin
Hungary, On Body and Soul, Ildikó Enyedi
Israel, Foxtrot, Samuel Maoz
Lebanon, The Insult, Ziad Doueir
Russia, Loveless, Andrey Zvyagintsev
Senegal, Félicité, Alain Gomis
