‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ sequel coming to the US

The US version of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will now be getting its sequel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, to be directed by Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe).

Alvarez told Digital Spy: “I cannot tell you that much about the project other than yes – it’s true, it’s correct, I will be directing, and we’re very excited about it.

“We’re still in conversations with the studio about certain things, but it does look like our next movie and we’ll be actively bold also in the story. We’re starting with a great script by Steven Knight and we’ll continue working on it to put our style and imprint in it. But we’re very excited about it.”

Nothing has been announced regarding casting, though a rumour is circulating that Alicia Vikander is wanted for the character of Lisbeth Salander over Rooney Mara. The film will be based on the fourth novel in the Millennium series, which was written by David Lagercrantz and not Larsson, who is only being credited for the characters. In the fourth book, titled The Girl in the Spider’s Web, computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist find themselves caught in a web of spies, cyber criminals and corrupt government officials.  The screenplay will be written by Steven Honcho (Peaky Blinders) and produced by Sony.
