As with classic Kaurismäki film, the camera sits gently on its protagonists, who exhibit the deadpan humour we have grown to love from Nordic film (not to mention the absurd situations). The film also has a beautiful colorisation and classical feel that has us very excited!
This is Kaurismäki’s first film since 2011’s Le Havre and is the second instalment in what will become a trilogy on port cities. The film tells the story of a Syrian refugee has he attempts to seek asylum in Helsinki, and the relationship he develops with a travelling salesman turned restauranteur.
The Other Side of Hope will premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and will be released locally in Finland on the 3rd of February.
Take a look at the trailer and poster below. We love the poster for its beautifully vintage look.
