Scandinavian Short films at the Short Film Festival in Clermont Ferrand

From the 31st January to the 8th February 2015, the International Short Film Festival in Clermont Ferrand (France) took place. This is, like every year, the opportunity to see movies from the whole world. This year, 4 Scandivian movies were selected : Rodlos, by Kira Richards Hansen (Denmark), Hjonabandssaela by Jörundur Ragnarsson (Iceland), Ja vi Elsker by Hallwar Witzo (Norway) and Hot Nasty Teen by Jens Assur (Sweden).

Rodlos’ story is about a coming-of-age story about a 14-year-old girl who works at a car mechanic’s and hangs out with her friends. She challenges boundaries in her search for identity, but her behaviour has repercussions that force her to acknowledge new aspects of who she is. This is the third short movie of this film-director, after Malk de Koijn and Fucking tøs.

Hjonabandssaela. The title of this film is also the name of a Icelandic cake and this means « happy weddings ». It is called like this because it is very simple to do and with very simple ingredients. But let’s go back to the movie itself. It shows two lifelong friends find their small-town routine thrown into peril when a buxom woman their own age shows up in their hot tub. One of them is very happy to meet a woman and become very friendly with her, whereas his friend is quite cold with her and then, starts to be afraid to loose his only friend.

Ja vi Elsker was also presented to the Festival de Cannes in 2014, in competition for the short films. This is about Four generations, each with a crisis, set in four different parts of Norway on the Norwegian Independence Day. So we saw a young kid whose mother let him in the car the day of the National day and so he starts the car and go out of the village,a teenage couple who are a little drunk and who are breaking up next to a beach, a military celebration with an old man who is quite deaf and in a wheelchair and who doesn’t seems really interested by the ceremony and prefer to go to the buffet lunch, and, finally, we go to the Far North, with a guy who live in a little house and who gets stuck outside naked and in the snow. This is the second movies from Hallwar Witzo, after the good Tuba Atlantic which was nominated for the Oscars 2012 for the best short movie.

Hot Nasty Teen is a darker film than the others. It shows a young, teenage girl, is being filmed through a simple video camera. She is being told to dance by an older man. Two months later they are traveling together by car through small town Sweden. She wants to go home but he insists that they should go on. After all, they have a few more friends to visit. This film is starring some famous Swedish actors and show a quite disturbing situation in the actual Sweden.

I invite you to discover these 4 short movies if you can. Here is the link of the International Short Film Festival of Clermont Ferrand (http://www.clermont-filmfest.com/index.php?nlang=2 ) And see you next year!
