Netflix to make a new mystery series about a young Wallander

The popular Kurt Wallander series isn’t going away anytime soon – now Netflix has announced that it has ordered a new series called Young Wallander, which is loosely based on Henning Mankell’s book series.

Set in contemporary Sweden, the series follows a 20-something-year-old Kurt Wallander as he works on his first case – attempting to prove himself as a recently graduated police officer. The series will consist of six episodes and will use both British and Swedish actors.

The Wallander franchise is massive – more than 40 million books have been sold worldwide, there are 9 films with Rolf Lassgård as Wallander, three seasons of a television series starring Krister Henriksson, and the series was remade in the United Kingdom with Kenneth Branagh.

The Young Wallander series is part of Netflix’s push for more international original series.

Production on Young Wallander will begin some time next year.
