The Swedish director Anna Odell is currently working on a new untitled film that will star actor Mikael Persbrandt [+], the Nordisk Film og TV Fond reports.
The film will be about two famous people, Odell and Persbrandt, trying to find their true identity. The film will deal with concepts of male and female identity.
Odell is a Swedish artist known for creating controversial works.Her film Unknown, woman 2009-349701 (Okänd, kvinna 2009-349701) was made to reconstruct Odell’s psychological breakdown in 1995, not as therapy but to prove the power structures within the healthcare system and society’s view of psychological illnesses. On the 21st of January 2009 she staged a suicide attempt and psychological breakdown and psychosis. Police took her to a psychiatric ER, and the next day she revealed she had faked the mental illness for her art film. Odell was criticised for using resources at the hospital that could have been used on actual mentally ill people seeking help. She was fined for the incident.
Odell’s directorial debut, The Reunion, won the Fipresci award in Venice and the Best Film & Best Script Guldbagge awards.
Filming is currently taking place in Film i Väst’s Trollhättan studios and will continue until the 8th of December. The film will be released domestically in October 2018.
