Lone Scherfig to open the Berlin Film Festival

The Danish director Lone Scherfig will open the 2019 Berlin Film Festival with her English-language film The Kindness of Strangers.

Written by Scherfig, The Kindness of Strangers will follow an ensemble of characters, all in their own way struggling to survive in a New York winter, who find laughter, love and kindness in each other. Originally, the film was called Secrets From the Russian Tea Room and the film took place within the famous Russian Tea Room in New York.

This is not the first time Lone Scherfig has shown a film at the festival. Her debut feature The Birthday Trip was shown in 1990, and her breakthrough hit, the Dogme film Italian For Beginners, won four awards at the festival in 2001.

The Kindness of Strangers will also compete for the coveted Golden Bear. It is a Danish/Canadian co-production. The cast includes Zoe Kazan, Tahar Rahim, Andrea Riseborough, Caleb Landry Jones, Jay Baruchel and Bill Nighy, who starred in Sherfig’s previous film, Their Finest Hour

The Berlin Film Festival kicks off on the 7th of February 2019.
