Ibsen under the Midnight Sun

Heart of Lightness

Norwegian director Jan Vardøen’s feature debut, Heart of Lightness (Søvnløs i Lofoten), will have its international premiere at the Montreal International Film Festival, which runs between 21 August-1 September. The film will screen in the festival’s Focus on World Cinema.

The Lady from the Sea

An author, musician and now filmmaker, Vardøen has himself written the story of eight UK actors, arriving in the far north of Norway to film a new version of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea. They think it will be an easy job, but they are soon overwhelmed by the lack of darkness and the surreal landscape that surrounds them.

English cast

The English-language feature from Vardøen’s company Beacon Isle Productions stars Dominic Mafham, Laura Donnelly, Michael Colgan, Daisy Head, Rosie Day, Richard Lumsden, Matt Ryan, John Hodgkinston and Sam Heughan in Ibsen under the Midnight Sun, which eventually becomes a successful movie.
