Finnish feminist novel to be turned into film in the UK

The Finnish novel ‘Maresi’, written by Maria Turtschaninoff, is going to be adapted into a feature film by the British company Film4.

Film4’s recent credits include American Honey, Free Fire, Ex-Machina and 12 Years a Slave.

The novel is set in a refuge for women and girls and we follow a thirteen-year-old who fights to defend herself and her community after it comes under attack by a vengeful grieving woman.

‘Maresi’ was released in Finland in 2014. The novel is due for a US release in January, and a second book is due out in Finland in a little over a year.

No release date has been announced for the film yet.
