Finnish crime series ‘Deadwind’ to be released on Netflix

The Finnish crime series Deadwind has been picked up by Netflix for worldwide distribution on its streaming platform.

Deadwind follows detective Sofia Karppi, a recent widow and single mother who is assigned a murder investigation when she returns to work. The body of a woman was discovered at a construction site in Helsinki, and Karppi must find who is responsible death. The construction site is linked with a new environmentally friendly block of apartments, and the series (like The Killing) connects the crime to contemporary issues. Just how The Killing did the crime and the mayor elections, Deadwind follows the crime and this construction company.

The series had its world premiere at the Gothenburg Film Festival, and we reviewed the series (which you can read here). While it isn’t particularly innovative when it comes to Nordic Noir, the series will certainly delight fans of the genre.

When the series was released in Finland in March, it found huge success among the locals, with almost 800,000 tuning in for episode one.

Deadwind will be released on Netflix on the 23rd of August.

We will also be watching Deadwind as part of our Nordic Film and TV Club. Learn more here.

  1. Mary K Shobe says:

Thank goodness! We will take almost any Nordic program at this point. US tv is virtually a wasteland in July and August.

  2. Conni Daigle says:

    I loved Deadwind!
I hope there is another season.
    I also loved The Killing.
The last three or four episodes were not great , but loved all else!!!
