Film Väst presented its co-productions at Cannes

Swedish production company Film Väst presented its upcoming coproductions at this years Cannes festival. We can be looking forward to new films from Ruben Östlund, Lars von Trier, Michael Nyqvist’s directorial debut and a new film from Janus Metz starring Shia LaBoeuf.

Here are the list of new films coming from Film Väst:

BORG/MCENROE, is a film about the 70’s and 80’s greatest tennis icons and their struggle for supremacy over center court, helmed by Danish director Janus Metz (True Detective 2015 and Armadillo 2010).  On location in Cannes were Sverrir Gudnason (A Serious Game2016) who plays the role of Bjorn Borg and Hollywood star Shia LaBeouf as John McEnroe. Stellan Skarsgard (Nyphomaniac 2013, The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo 2011) plays the role as Bjorn Borg’s coach. Shia LaBeouf is also starring in American Honey, being in main competition at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Borg/McEnroe is produced by SF Studios in co-production with Film Väst, Swedish Television, Yellow Film & TV with the support of the Swedish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fund and MEDIA.  The shooting begins in autumn 2016 and will take place in West Sweden, London, Monaco and New York. Premiere in 2017.

THE SQUARE was presented by director Ruben Östlund who competed and won with Force Majeure in Un Certain Regard in Cannes 2014. The key roles will be played by rising Hollywood star Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men 2007-2015, The One I Love 2015) and Danish actor Claes Bang (Sibel & Max 2015-2016, The Bridge 2013). The film is about Fabrice, an ambitious museum Director determined to make huge impact on the international art world with a spectacular exhibition. The Square is a Swedish, French and German production filmed in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Berlin, between June-October 2016 and is scheduled to premiere 2017.

Michael Nyqvist (The Serious Game 2016, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol 2011) announced his directorial debut with the comedyJUST ANOTHER VET from a script by Anders Tempelman. He also plays the leading role as Edward, a slightly depressed provincial veterinarian sick of treating who dreams of sailing around the world. Producers are Carola Hansson and Börje Hansson at Bright Moving Pictures. The shooting will take place in September-October 2016 in the Film Väst region and the film is scheduled to premiere in the autumn 2017.

Then it was Scandicrime time for the youngest when the first really exciting detective story for children was presented by producerLinda Hambäck who also directed the animated film. The feature film THE MYSTERIOUS THEFT stars Stellan Skarsgard,Melinda Kinnaman and Felix Herngren and the plot revolves around the little mouse Paddy who takes over a tricky case when Commissioner Gordon retires. The film is animated by Dockhus Animation and post-production is located at Trollhattan, Sweden. The premiere is scheduled for the autumn 2017.

Sometimes you just have to scram. Ivica Zubak directs the suburban drama AN EXTRAORDINARY CUT, which he presented along with the film’s producer Abbe Hassan. Can Demirtas plays the main character Metin who has a completely unnecessary talent – he can write. So he writes a diary about everything that happens with great detail. If the diary would end up with the police, half of the hood would be arrested and Metin would be dead. The film is produced by Indian Summer Film and is scheduled to premiere in 2017.

Louise Vesth, producer at Zentropa gave a status report on Lars von Trier’s new film THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT. The plot revolves around a serial killer and the story is told from his perspective. The film is scheduled to start shooting in fall in Trollhättan/Vänersborg and Copenhagen and will premiere in 2018.

Madeleine Ekman and Lizette Jonic, also producers at Zentropa presented the film MY SAGA based on Karl Ove Knausgaard’s essays on the Vikings’ presumed route from Newfoundland to Minnesota, that were published in the New York Times Magazine last year. Oscar winner Alexander Payne (The Descendants 2011, Sideways 2004) is directing and the producers are Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa at Bona Fide Productions (Nebraska 2013, Little Miss Sunshine 2006). The film is a result of an international producer exchange that was organized by Film Väst last year.
