Toronto, ON (September 9, 2014) – EuropaCorp today announced they have acquired U.S. rights to Jalmari Helander’s BIG GAME, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Onni Tommila. BIG GAME marks EuropaCorps’s first ever festival acquisition. EuropaCorp is eyeing a wide domestic release for the film in 2015 and will announce distribution plans at a later date.
BIG GAME, directed and written by Jalmari Helander, premiered on Friday night as the opening film for the Midnight Madness section at the Toronto International Film Festival. This is the second deal for Helander who premiered his critically acclaimed film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale at TIFF in 2010, which was picked up by Oscilloscope Laboratories.
BIG GAME tells the story of Oskari, a timid 13-year-old, who is called upon tradition to spend one day and one night alone in the wilderness to prove himself a man. On his adventure Oskari discovers an escape pod belonging to Air Force One housing the President of the United States. In the skies above, terrorists are hurtling their way to the crash site hell-bent on kidnapping the President. Plunged into a deadly game of cat and mouse with only hours to spare, Oskari and the President must team up to survive the most extraordinary night of their lives.
“We could not be more thrilled about the deal with EuropaCorp on the distribution of BIG GAME. Our goal is for the largest audience possible to experience the film and EuropaCorp understands the strength of the film in the U.S. marketplace and their confidence in this title is evident in their release strategy,” said Petri Jokiranta, Producer and Co-Writer of BIG GAME.
“BIG GAME is a fantastic opportunity for EuropaCorp USA to kick-off its distribution efforts,” said Christophe Lambert, CEO of EuropaCorp. “Jalmari and Petri are talented, visionary filmmakers and we are excited to add their film to our growing slate.”
The film will be released through RelativityEuropaCorpDistribution LLC under the EuropaCorp banner.
The film also stars Ray Stevenson, Mehmet Kurtulus, Victor Garber, Ted Levine, Felicity Huffman and Jim Broadbent.
