DR receives International Emmy

Maria Rørbye Rønn, the CEO of the Danish pubcaster DR, has received an international Emmy® Directorate Award in New York.

The award was given out in recognition of the Danish Broadcasting Corporations role in pioneering and driving the success of Nordic Noir around the world. Since the breakthrough series Unit One in 2002, DR has accumulated international accolades and many of its top shows such as The KillingThe Bridge, The Legacy, and Follow the Money have been sold around the world as originals and formats.

Rørbye Rønn said: “I am incredibly proud of the award not just on DR’s behalf, but on Denmark’s behalf. This is an award for all the creative talents in Denmark that have helped create world class Danish drama over the years. The Emmy is a huge recognition of the fact that although Denmark is a small country, we have managed to become big on the international scene by telling stories about our country and Danish people to the entire world.”

Piv Bernth Head of DR Drama since 2011 said: “the amazing thing is that it’s when we’ve had the courage to be daring that we’ve achieved international successes. With Forbrydelsen/The Killing, people had to wait for 20 episodes to see Sara Lund solve the case of a single murder, in her own dark way. We hadn’t anticipated that it would become a world hit as well as help to create an international artistic wave, ” she said, referring to the Nordic Noir.
