The cast has been announced for Niels Arden Oplev’s new film Daniel, which tells the story of the Danish photographer held hostage by ISIS.
Daniel follows the story of Danish photographer Daniel Rye, who was captured while in Syria in 2018 and held hostage by ISIS for 398 days. He was in captivity with 23 other foreign nationals and Rye is the last hostage to escape ISIS captivity alive.
Toby Kebbell will play US reporter James Foley, who was held captive and executed by ISIS. Kebbell is known for his work in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, War Horse, Bloodshot, Destroyer and Black Mirror. Esben Smed plays Rye, and Anders W. Berthelsen plays the negotiator in the film.
Niels Arden Oplev is best known for directing the Swedish The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo back in 2009. Since then, he has directed episodes of Under the Dome, Mr. Robot, and FBI, as well as the films Speed Walking and Flatliners. Acclaimed Danish screenwriter Anders Thomas Jensen wrote the screenplay. Jensen has directed Men and Chicken and Adams Apples, and also wrote scripts for dozens of well-known Danish films, including Susanne Bier’s In a Better World.
Daniel is shooting in Gothenburg, Denmark and Jordan, with filming to conclude in January. Daniel will be released in Denmark in September next year, and no international release date has been announced.
