Cannes 2016: Ruben Ostlund starts production on THE SQUARE

Swedish director Ruben Ostlund has start production on The Square, and was at the Cannes Film Festival revealing its cast and crew.

The lead is to be played by US actress Elisabeth Moss, who recently won a Golden Globe in 2013 for her performance in Top of the Lake. Danish actors Claes Bang (The Bridge) and Christopher Laessø, and Swedish actress Marina Schiptjenko will also star in the film.

In The Square, Moss plays an ambitious museum director determined to make a huge impact on the international art world with a spectacular exhibition. “I want to shed light on the confidence crack that is slowly but surely widening between people when society is becoming increasingly individualistic and higher ideals are being sacrificed, using the international art world as a contemporary backdrop,” explained Östlund as he introduced the project at Cannes.

His crew will mostly be made up of the same crew as Force Majeure – besides Hemmendorff, production designer Josefin Åsberg, cinematographer Fredrik Wenzel (who won a Guldbagge Award for his work) and editor Jacob Schulsingerare. The Square is a Swedish-French-German co-production produced by Film Vast, Societe Parisienne de Production, Essential Film, ARTE and SVT.

The Square will be released in 2017, and we have a feeling it’ll be timed with the Cannes Film Festival.
