Ása Helga Hjörleifsdóttir awarded Best Director at Kolkata Film Festival

The Icelandic director Ása Helga Hjörleifsdóttir [+] has won the Best Director Award at the Kolkata International Film Festival in India.

Her debut feature The Swan [+] (Svanurinn in Icelandic), which she also wrote, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September. It will shortly be screening in Tallinn as well as Cairo at their film festivals.

The film tells the story of a nine-year-old girl who is sent to live in the countryside for a summer and work on a farm. However, she soon finds herself entangled in a drama she can hardly grasp. Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson [+]Thor Kristjansson [+]Katla M. Þorgeirsdóttir [+]Þuríður Blær Jóhannsdóttir [+] and Gríma Valsdóttir [+] star in the film.
