The hit Swedish film As it is in Heaven has been selected to screen at the International Film Series in Davis, California.

The film, which stars Michael Nyqvist, is about the successful international conductor Daniel Daréus, whose career is cut short by a heart attack and decides to return to his childhood village in the north of Sweden. He buys an old primary school that he once attended and plans to live a quiet, solitary life.

The local pastor Stig persuades him to work with the amateur church choir. Daniel uses techniques that are at first very strange to the villagers with a goal to “create music that will open a person’s heart,” but that gradually improve their musical quality. What is more, he reluctantly becomes drawn into the lives of the choir’s members and other villagers, eliciting passion for music as well as exposing character traits, both good and bad.

As it is in Heaven is one of the most successful Scandinavian films of all time due to its high cinema admissions around the world.

Michael Nyqvist is best known for his leading role in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and passed away last year.

The film will screen on the 20th of April at the International House in Davis, California.
