Announcing a new round of films for their Generation Kplus programme, the Berlin Film Festival has selected “Antboy – Revenge of the Red Fury,” Ask Hasselbalch’s second feature about the boy Pelle who gains superpowers when bitten by a mutant ant. Already revealed for this section is the animated “Mini and the Mozzies” by Jannik Hastrup and Flemming Quist Møller.
In Ask Hasselbalch’s second Antboy film, our young superhero is more popular than ever following his defeat of the supervillain The Flea.
Pelle who has turned thirteen is enjoying his secret life as a superhero. His greatest wish is to be more than just friends with Ida, but that’s not so easy. Meanwhile, Antboy faces an even greater foe than before: Anti-Christian, the new boy at school, who will stop at nothing to steal Ida away from him. And as if that wasn’t enough, Pelle finds himself haunted. A new supervillain has taken the stage.
“Antboy – Revenge of the Red Fury” is nominated in seven categories in the Danish film industry’s prestigious Robert Awards (1 February) and is sold to a string of territories including the US, Brazil, Asia, Italy, France, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. The film is produced by Eva Jakobsen for Nimbus Film with support from the Danish Film Institute. Attraction Distribution is handling international sales. The film was released domestically on 25 December.
Hasselbalch’s feature debut “Antboy” (2013) opened at Toronto Film Festival. The film won the Robert Award for Best Danish Children and Youth Film and sold an impressive 175,000 tickets at Danish cinemas.
The Berlinale has already announced Jannik Hastrup og Flemming Quist Møller’s Mini and the Mozzies in the children’s programme Generation Kplus, Christian Braad Thomsen’s documentary Fassbinder – To Love without Demands in the Panorama section, Pebbles at Your Door in Berlinale Shorts, and the Argentine-Danish co-production The Mad Half Hour by Leonardo Brzezicki, equally in the Shorts competition. Joachim Fjelstrup is selected as Denmark’s Shooting Star. More films are to be announced over the next week.
