Anders Danielsen Lie to play Anders Breivik in new film

Norwegian actor Anders Danielsen Lie [+] has been announced to play Anders Breivik in a new film about the 2011 Norwegian terrorist attacks.

The film will be directed by Paul Greengrass, who made headlines in Norway when it was revealed he had been in contact with Åsne Seierstad to base the film on her book about the terrorist, titled One of Us. The book portrays Breivik’s life but also follows two sisters and a group of friends until the terrorist attacks on Utøya.

Jon Øigarden [+] will play the defender Geir Lippestad.

Danielsen Lie is known for his leading role in films Oslo, 31 August [+] and Reprise [+], as well as NRK’s series Nobel [+]. Øigarden recently played the lead role in the NRK series Mammon [+].


This is one of three films currently being made about the attacks. A documentary is in production, and Norwegian director Erik Poppe (known for The King’s Choice [+] and Hawaii, Oslo [+]) is also directing a film about the attacks.

The producers of Greengrass’ films have been in contact with Breivik’s lawyer and a national support group for the attack. The Norwegian Film Institute has given 17.1 million kroner (almost $3 million USD) in support to the film.


Filming on Greengrass’ film, which has the provisional title Norway, started in Norway last week.
