Aki Kaurismäki’s new film coming in February

Aki Kaurismäki’s new film, titled The Other Side of Hope, will be premiering in Finnish cinemas on the 3rd of February 2017.

Shot in early autumn in Helsinki, the film tells the story of a Finnish travelling salesman and a Syrian refugee crossing paths.

The first images have been released from the film, and introduce actors Sherwan Haji playing the Syrian Khaled, Sakari Kuosmanen playing Wikström the salesman. Also, Janne Hyytiäinen, Nuppu Koivu and Ilkka Koivula can be seen in the photos as the personnel of the “Kultainen tuoppi” restaurant owned by Wikström, and Simon Hussein Al-Bazoon playing the Iraqi asylum seeker Mazdak. The film will also star, among others, Kaija Pakarinen, Kati Outinen, Tommi Korpela and Tuomari Nurmio. The Other Side of Hope is shot on 35mm film by Timo Salminen.

The Other Side of Hope is the second instalment in Kaurismäki’s trilogy focusing on port cities, which began with Le Havre. The Other Side of Hope is produced by Sputnik together with Bufo. The film has been made with the support of The Finnish Film Foundation, Finland 100 programme and The Church Media Foundation, and with the participation of YLE Co-productions and ZDF / Arte. The film will be distributed in Finland by B-Plan Distribution and international sales are handled by The Match Factory.
