Aki Kaurismäki wins Silver Bear at Berlin Film Festival

The awards for the Berlin Film Festival were presented over the weekend, with Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki winning the Silver Bear for Best Director.

He won this award for his new film, The Other Side of Hope, which tells the story of Syrian refugee Khaled who arrives in Helsinki. There he crosses paths with Wikström, a travelling salesman who wins big at a poker table and buys a restaurant. When the authorities turn down Khaled’s asylum application, he is forced underground and Wikström finds him sleeping near the restaurant. He offers him a job and somewhere to stay.

The top prize of the night, the Golden Bear, went to the Hungarian film On Body and Soul, directed by Ildiko Enyedi.
