A WAR is Denmark’s entry for the Oscars

The Danish Film Institute has announced that Tobias Lindholm’s A War is Denmark’s official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards in 2016. The film beat out other big names Men and Chicken and The Look of Silence.

A War stars Danish actor Pilou Asbæk as Claus M. Pedersen, the company commander who, along with his men, are stationed in an an Afghan province. Meanwhile back in Denmark Claus’ wife Maria is trying to hold together everyday life with her husband at war and their three children missing their father. During a routine mission, the soldiers are caught in heavy cross-fire, and in order to save his men Claus has to make a decision that has grave consequences for him and his family at home.

Denmark was last nominated in the category back in 2014 with Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt, a film that Lindholm co-wrote. The last time Scandinavia won the award was in 2011 with Susanne Bier’s In a Better World.
