A new Swedish political thriller called ‘The Inner Circle’ has been announced

A new Swedish political thriller series called The Inner Circle has been announced, with Viaplay picking up the series.

Based on the novel ‘In the Eye of the Power’ by Per Schlingmann, the series will be the story of a group of people working around political power over a few summer days in Almedalen. Every year, all the politicians in Sweden descend on the town and spend a few days promoting their parties and debating each other. This is an actual event, and was recently depicted in a documentary called A Good Week for Democracy.

Per Schlingmann is a well known Swedish political strategist, former Party Secretary for the Moderate Party and the Secretary of State for the former Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.

The cast includes Niklas Engdahl, who plays the Minister for Enterprise and the ‘golden boy’ of politics, and Nanna Blondell, who is his press secretary.

Fredrik Ljungberg, Director of Programmes at Viaplay said: “We are extremely proud to create a new sharp drama with Per Schlingmann who has a unique insight into a world that we all want to know more about. This will be a Swedish mix of House of Cards and Empire, a strong character-driven drama about political life behind the façade.”

The Inner Circle will premiere on Viaplay in 2019. A second season is rumoured and will be based on Schlingmann’s next novel, to be published in August.
