France’s StudioCanal will join forces with Danish major Nordisk Film to produce Danish award-winning writer-director Tobias Lindholm’s A War, concluding his trilogy of “desperate men in small rooms”, with Danish actor Pilou Asbæk in the lead.
“Since we saw A Hijacking[+], we knew that Lindholm was a director we wanted to work with at Studiocanal – he is clearly one of the most exciting talents in Europe today,” saidRon Halpern, StudioCanal’s executive VP of international production and acquisitions, about the Tomas Radoor and René Ezra production for Nordisk Film Production.
After playing a young convict in a hardcore prison ward in R[+] (2010) and a ship’s cook taken hostage by pirates on the Indian Ocean in A Hijacking (2012), Asbæk will now play a Danish Army major, facing the consequences of his actions during his most dangerous mission in Afghanistan.
During a fight with the Taliban, he made the decision to bomb the area – the campaign was successful, but the bodies of 11 Afghan women and children were found in the rubble. Now he faces a military trial for war crimes, while he also has to try to keep his life and family together.
The cast for A War, which received one of the four $10,000 Sundance Institute–Mahindra Global Filmmaking Awards at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, includes Tuva Novotny,Søren Malling, Charlotte Munck and Dulfi Al-Jabouri.
Nordisk will be in charge of Scandinavian distribution, while StudioCanal will handle France, Germany, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, and will start international sales for the film this week at Cannes.
