Oscar nominated Danish documentarist Anders Østergaard is guest of honour of the 14th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival that kick starts today.
Østergaard will give a Master class on February 1st and four of his films will screen at the festival: his latest work 1989 as well as Burma VJ, Tintin & I and The Magus. Over 30 renowned filmmakers are expected at Docpoint such as Sweden’s Nima Sarvestami (Those Who Say No), Russia’s Marina Goldovskaya (A Bitter Taste) and Holland’s Jos de Putter (See No Evil).
Among the 166 documentary films on display are 11 titles part of the New Finnish Documentary Film Series, such as festival opener Men of Talvivaara by Markku Heikkinen. According to the jury who compiled the series, many films in the programme look into social problems, examined through the loves and stories of individual people. “We were particularly delighted by the return of politics into the Finnish documentary scene,” said the jury headed by DocPoint artistic director Ulla Simonen.
