Joshua Oppenheimer

Documentarist Joshua Oppenheimer is hitting two major film festivals this summer: First, his new film, “The Look of Silence”, a companion piece to his big, Oscar-nominated succes “The Act of Killing”, is set to debut at the Venice Film Festival, and a few days later it will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Joshua Oppenheimer’s new opus, also produced by Signe Byrge Sørensen for Final Cut For Real, depicts the genocide in Indonesia in the mid-1960s, but this time seen from the perspective of the victims. “The Look of Silence” follows a family whose son was killed in the Indonesian genocide, accused of being a communist. The youngest son in the family, now grown up, vows to confront the people who killed his brother. It is these encounters that make up the core of the film.

It has already been announced that Susanne Bier’s drama “A Second Chance” will have its world premiere in Toronto as part of the Special Presentations section. Swedish Ruben Östlund’s feature film “Force Majeure” and the American “The Yes Men Are Revolting”, both with Danish co-production, will also screen at the festival. Toronto programmers will make additional lineup announcements over the coming weeks.
