KING OF  FINLAND (SUOMEN KUNINGAS)

When a minor German prince becomes an unlikely king candidate, the assignment to teach him the language of his future subjects seems purely formal at first. But as the offbeat candidate is elected king, the pupil and his tutor find themselves in the midst of ugly political intrigue. Ultimately, both of them have to give up their life dreams in order to save a nation from ruin.
The King of Finland is a story about two men, thrown together by a whim of fate. Prince FRIEDRICH KARL, 50, is a member of old European aristocracy, brother-in-law of mighty KAISER Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany. ILMARI KASKI, 26, is an ambitious young lawyer, working odd jobs in Finland, a newly independent state, just out of a bloody Civil War.
As the story starts, Ilmari gets assigned to a high-level delegation on its way to Berlin. The aim of the journey is to get Kaiser’s son Prince OSCAR for Finland’s king and turn the country into a Monarchy. With a strong and autocratic sovereign as its ruler, the leaders of the nation hope to uproot Socialism from the masses and strengthen Finland’s position as mighty Germany’s ally.
The plan backfires as Kaiser refuses to give his son to the Finns. Instead, he suggests his “nerdy” brother-in-law Friedrich Karl for the position. Reluctant to turn down Kaiser’s own man, the Finnish politicians send Ilmari off to teach and entertain the offbeat king candidate – just until they work up the courage to turn him down and find someone more suitable for the position.
Keeping Friedrich Karl company in his castle and teaching him the peculiar language of his “future subjects”, Ilmari befriends the prince. Slowly, he starts having second thoughts about his own role in the project. He begins to appreciate this soft-spoken family man, an aging officer, wounded in the war, trying to build happiness and meaning into his life and the life of his family.
Fate intervenes, as the winds in the Great War turn and Germany starts losing. As no one now wants to become king of Finland, one of Kaiser’s many protectorates, the Finnish politicians grab the only man they have and choose Friedrich Karl as Finland’s sovereign. Things looks good for a while – until the prince finds out about all the things the politicians have kept from him: the atrocities of the Civil War, the undemocratic nature of his election as king…
Friedrich Karl refuses the crown. But by now Ilmari has already come to realize that this modest and loving man would make a much better king for his young nation, crippled by a traumatic Civil War than any strong Prussian ruler ever could! He wants to set things right for both his new friend and his country, and tries to talk him into changing his mind.
